CBCSD & TJHS Activity Policies

Local Eligibility for Student Activities: CBCSD School Board Policy 612

Iowa Code 36.15 (1) states that local school boards may impose additional eligibility requirements not in conflict with state rules.  Board Policy 612 establishes the standards by which students in grades 7-12 shall conduct themselves if they choose to take advantage of the privileges afforded them by participating in activities as defined in this policy. Students participating in activities will conduct themselves appropriately at all times both on school grounds and away from school. The responsibility of good conduct is an extension of the responsibility to represent the school and community in an appropriate manner. A school administrator or sponsor may declare a student in grades 7-12 ineligible to participate in an activity when the conduct of that student has been determined to be in violation of the established rules set by policy 612 and/or the specific activity in which the student is participating. Here is a summary of eligibility checks throughout a semester:

Grades are monitored throughout the semester for students in athletics and activities.  Teachers must make sure gradebooks are up to date and assessments are graded at these critical times.  All grades will be pulled from PowerSchool.

  • Week 1 Check YELLOW, The AD will supply a grade and attendance  list to the coach/sponsor.  The coach/sponsor will make a contact with athlete and a parent about any failing /attendance class(es).  No official consequence at this time, however coaches can implement their own consequences. The grades will be checked the following Monday.
  • Week 2 Check RED.  The AD will supply a grade and attendance  list to the coach/sponsor.  The coach/sponsor will make a contact with athlete and a parent about any failing /attendance class(es).  If a student who was yellow in the previous week still has a F, or once again more than 2 TDY or UNV, they will be INELIGIBLE
  • What this means for students and coaches–
  • The student is ineligible to play in the FIRST contest of that week
  • The student must attend after school academic help on that Monday, and every day until the grade comes up.  If they miss part of practice because of this, they are excused from that absence with the team.  The parent will be contacted and informed.  The coach will also be notified and kept informed.
  • After the first contest of that week, the grades for that student will be checked again before the next contest (if applicable).  If the grade is still an F, the student is then ineligible from all contests until the grade check on the following Monday starts the process all over, and the student will remain in after school academic help until the grade(s) are passing. 

End of Semester–SAME AS PAST YEARS, state rule of no pass no play, 20 days ineligible next sport/activity if a class is failed.
